Shopping centre guards dished up a silver service of security after helping police catch potential thieves.

The eagle-eyed team spotted three people trying to cash in what was believed to be antique cutlery, alleged to have been stolen.

Four members of Phoenix Security Services were keeping an eye on the comings and goings at Broad Street Mall on Tuesday when they noticed three people on CCTV.

Security guard Mark Dibley said: “It was about mid-morning and my colleagues saw them acting suspiciously and drinking from a bottle of wine.

“They came in and started to hand over some silverware to one of the ‘cash for gold’ stands and we thought it was suspicious.

“I came in and recognised one of the males as a well-known shoplifter and contacted the police.

“I got a call from police to say the items matched the description of items taken from a burglary in Henley.”

The 26-year-old continued: “Later that day one of my colleagues was on patrol and spotted two of the people and ran up and grabbed hold of them and they were arrested by police.

“The day after my colleague spotted the third male and he too was arrested by police.”

Mr Dibley said it was thanks to Reading Businesses Against Crime and using the town radio system used by businesses that he recognised one of the men.

Phoenix Security Services owner Rob Clark added: “It’s a good, positive situation for us and it shows people are being vigilant against criminals.”

Police spokeswoman Rebecca Webber confirmed the cutlery was seized but could not confirm if the items were linked to burglaries.

However, she said it was not connected to a burglary in Henley in March, in which antique silver tablewear worth thousands of pounds was stolen.

A man and woman were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of burglary but were released without charge. Police do not have any information to suggest a third arrest took place on Wednesday.
